Lucy's fight against neuroblastoma
Lucy was only 5 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 4, high-risk Neuroblastoma. When she should have been preparing to start school, Lucy and her family were thrust into a world of cancer protocols, hospital visits and intense treatments. At just 5 years of age, Lucy underwent 5 rounds of chemo, a surgery to remove her tumour and a tandem cell transplant. After all of this Lucy was declared cancer free.
Unfortunately, not every child with this diagnosis is this lucky as aggressive forms of Neuroblastoma have only a 50% survival rate.
2Little2Late Lottery
The name 2Little2Late is derived from the statistic that the average age of diagnosis for neuroblastoma is 2 years old (2Little), and due to the symptoms of the disease being difficult to identify, quite often the diagnosis does not come soon enough (2late).
Neuroblastoma is the most common cause of childhood cancer death of children under the age of 5. This lottery raises money for Neuroblastoma Australia, a charity dedicated to improving the efficacy and safety of treatments for neuroblastoma. The goal is to get to a point where the suvival rate for children with neuroblastoma is 100%, so that every child diagnosed with this disease gets the chance to grow up and lead long and healthy lives.
Average Age of Diagnosis:
2 Years Old
Neuroblastoma affects children between the ages of 0 and 5, with 2 years of age being the average age of diagnosis. Neuroblastoma can be difficult to diagnose as symptoms often do not become apparent until the tumour has reached a certain size. This is extra difficult as children at this age are often too young to be able to communicate that they are not feeling right.
Survival Rate for Aggressive Neuroblastoma:
1 in 2
Neuroblastoma is a complex cancer with many different types that behave differently. In cases where the tumours are aggressive, the average survival rate is only 50%. Many children in these cases who do survive suffer long-term effects from the treatment.
